Self-Driving Cars Soon

September 26, 2018 - Cars

I don’t that much about cars, but I DO know that it’s going to be a great benefit to the human race when they drive themselves. There was this show set in the future, Socio-Lass, and all the cars were self-driving on the freeway. What’s more, they didn’t even look like cars: they were pods of varying sizes made out of a self-healing polymer that made even accidental collisions soft and spongy, like the whole world was a game of dodgem cars. I guess when everything is electric you can make cars whatever shape you like.

I can’t drive, of course…the concept terrifies me. No one wants me behind the wheel. But I keep thinking about what the world would be like if suddenly we all just had pods that took us places. There’s a garage I go to for car repairs near Northcote and I can hear all of their efforts over the fence while the kids are playing outside. All that whirring and grinding and sawing and welding and whatever, I really don’t know what a mechanic does. But I DO know their jobs would be easier in a pod world. The outside of your transport pod would just take care of itself, and the job of a mechanic would be mostly like an electrician who specialises in transport vehicles.

Garages would be all white and shiny because oil and petrol are no longer necessary, so mechanics would probably lose some of that negative stigma that they’re tough and tumble folk. In fact, you could show up for your job at the car garage in a suit, like a white-collar person!

No, probably not, actually. There would still be electrical work going on, and a stray spark could easily ignite your dangling tie. So maybe it’ll be smart casual, no loose clothing or flammable fabrics. Happy medium for all the people who need a tyre repair. Northcote residents are spoiled by having such an impressive garage so close. Who know what the future will hold, although working conditions for mechanics will infinitely be better because of the chatty on-board AI. With seventeen different accent settings.
